Overview

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a versatile American stealth aircraft designed for air superiority, strike missions, electronic warfare, and intelligence operations. Developed by Lockheed Martin in partnership with Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems, it includes three main variants: the F-35A for conventional takeoff and landing, the F-35B for short takeoff and vertical landing, and the F-35C for carrier-based operations. Derived from the Lockheed Martin X-35, it won the Joint Strike Fighter program in 2001. The United States provides primary funding, with contributions from NATO countries and key allies. The F-35 first flew in 2006, entering service with the U.S. Marine Corps (F-35B) in July 2015, followed by the U.S. Air Force (F-35A) in August 2016 and the U.S. Navy (F-35C) in February 2019. It saw combat in 2018 with the Israeli Air Force. The U.S. plans to acquire 2,456 F-35s by 2044, making it a cornerstone of tactical aviation for the U.S. Armed Forces and NATO, with an expected operational life until 2070.
