Their foundation on existing components, like the truck-derived engine, kept costs down. Manufactured in Kharkov and licensed for production in Poland and Bulgaria, they offered widespread availability. These factors, coupled with their amphibious capabilities and manoeuvrability, made them valuable assets for the Soviet army. While the MT-L served primarily as a tractor for artillery pieces, the MT-LB's armour allowed it to take on diverse roles. It could transport troops, provide fire support, and even serve as a mobile command post.
