Trumpeter 1/700 HMS Colombo Light Cruiser Scaled Plastic Model Kit
Colombo, named after the former capital city of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), had it's keel laid by the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company on December 8, 1917, and was launched on December 18, 1918. While it missed World War I action, it later served during World War II. In the interwar period, Colombo served in the Far East with the Eastern Fleet from 1919 to 1926, and later on the North American and West Indies Station. it returned to the Eastern Fleet from July 1932 to 1935, and then went back to the UK to be placed in reserve. During World War II, Colombo initially served with the Home Fleet, capturing the German merchant ship Henning Oldendorff southeast of Iceland. It then rejoined the Eastern Fleet from August 1940 to June 1942. Following this, Colombo returned to the UK for a refit and conversion into an anti-aircraft cruiser between June 1942 and March 1943. After surviving the war, Colombo was sold on January 22, 1948, and subsequently dismantled for scrap at the Cashmore yards in Newport on May 13, 1948.
