Despite its awkward appearance, the Brewster Buffalo held significant importance in US aviation history, seeing extensive combat use during the early stages of WWII. Emerging victorious in a fly-off competition against the Grumman Wildcat to supply the US Navy with a new, contemporary carrier-based monoplane fighter, the Buffalo incorporated numerous advanced design elements, specifically tailored for operations from US aircraft carriers.

The fighter also garnered robust international sales, with Britain, Finland, and the Netherlands all deploying the Buffalo during WWII. This was especially notable within the Commonwealth Air Forces when confronting the Japanese in South East Asia.
