However, during its development phase, the Luftwaffe introduced their latest Bf 109 fighter variant, which began downing Spitfires in significant numbers, necessitating immediate action.

The Spitfire Mk.V represented a substantial improvement over the Mk.II airframe, boasting the latest Merlin engine iteration. This enhancement provided the aircraft with superior high-altitude performance. Ultimately, this variant would become the standard for over 140 RAF Squadrons.
