Overview

When the Japanese Zero made its debut in 1940, it undeniably stood out as the most advanced naval fighter globally, quickly gaining a reputation as an exceptional dog fighter. In the initial encounters, the Zero's performance was so outstanding that its pilots achieved an almost unbelievable victory ratio of 12 to 1 against their opponents. In 1940, while the Wehrmacht advanced across Europe, relatively little attention was paid to developments in the Far East. After years of rearmament and upgrades, the Japanese Navy possessed some of the world's most cutting-edge naval aircraft, prominently featuring the exceptional Mitsubishi A6M Zero. Throughout WWII, this long-range naval fighter played a pivotal role in Japan's expansionist endeavours and proved unmatched in the early stages of the war, particularly in the Pacific region. The Zero also rapidly gained a reputation as a formidable dog fighter, causing Allied pilots to learn the importance of avoiding slow, turning engagements with this exquisitely balanced aircraft. American aviators soon devised tactics that steered clear of the Zero's strengths, enabling them to achieve victories. With the introduction of newer fighters, the A6M Zero started revealing its vulnerabilities, primarily the lack of pilot armour protection and absence of self-sealing fuel tanks in the wings. Employing hit-and-run boom-and-zoom tactics, American pilots gradually began to counter the once-feared Zero effectively.

Now, Airfix has carefully recreated this fighter in 1/72 scale ready for you to build and display.
