FAQs for Hornby Model Railway Sets & Trains
Who is Hornby Hobbies for?
Hornby Hobbies is aimed at model railway enthusiasts — collectors and hobbyists who enjoy building, running and developing scale train layouts rather than RC cars. They suit beginners getting started with their first train set, returning hobbyists rebuilding a layout after years away, and dedicated modellers expanding an existing collection. The brand has been part of the model railway hobby since 1901, so for many British and Australian railway modellers Hornby is the name that defined their first experience of the hobby and remains the obvious starting point today.
What is Hornby known for?
Hornby Hobbies has been making model railways and locomotives since 1901, which makes it one of the longest-running names in scale modelling worldwide. The brand is most strongly associated with British outline trains in OO gauge, including starter train sets and individual locomotives. For many hobbyists, a Hornby train set represents their first introduction to model railways. The combination of long heritage, strong brand recognition and a focus on accessible train sets is what continues to make Hornby a go-to choice for new and returning modellers.
Can I buy Hornby train sets in Australia?
Yes. We currently hold four Hornby items in our Australian warehouse, focused on the popular R-series train sets. That gives Australian model railway hobbyists local access to a curated Hornby selection without needing to wait on international shipping for a starter set. Because the global Hornby catalogue is enormous and spans many different locomotives, rolling stock and track items, not every product will be on the shelf locally — but for entry-level R-series train sets in particular, we are a sensible Australian starting point.
Which Hornby train sets do you stock?
Our current Hornby range consists of four R-series train sets, which are designed to give new model railway hobbyists a complete starting point — locomotive, rolling stock, track and a power controller in a single box. Rather than list each set individually, the live Hornby category page is the most accurate reference for which specific R-series sets are currently available. If you are considering Hornby as a gift or first layout, our team can help match a starter set to the recipient's age, interests and available space.
