Tamiya 1/48 Grumman FM-1 Wildcat Fighter Plastic Model Kit

Deployed in 1940, the Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat served as a mainstay carrier-based fighter for the U.S. Navy. In 1942, the F4F-4 arrived with a foldable wing for efficient deck operations and increased firepower, boasting six 12.7mm machine guns. Its bulletproof fuselage and robust design, coupled with skilled pilots, made it a formidable opponent against the Zero fighter. While post-WWII aircraft like the F6F Hellcat and F4U Corsair surpassed its capabilities, the Wildcat's suitability for smaller carriers ensured its continued use as an escort fighter and for air force reinforcement. When Grumman shifted focus to the F6F, Eastern Air Lines took over production of the F4F-4, creating the FM variant. The FM-1 was largely identical to the F4F-4 except for reduced machine guns. The Wildcat also saw service in the Royal Navy as the Martlet, continuing to perform anti-submarine patrols and convoy escorts until war's end.
