The M5A1 Stuart was an improved version of the successful M3 light tank, officially accepted for US service in 1942. Powered by twin Cadillac V8 engines, it was fast and reliable, serving mainly in reconnaissance units on the Italian and Western European fronts. During the tough fighting in the Normandy countryside, many Stuarts were fitted with prominent hedgerow cutters on their hulls to break through the dense bocage terrain.
