While historically dwelling in the shadow of the Gloster Meteor, the de Havilland Vampire carved out its own significant legacy. Although it may have been the second jet fighter to join the ranks of the Royal Air Force, the
Vampire left an indelible mark in aviation history. Distinguished as the first RAF aircraft capable of surpassing 500mph, the Vampire also achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the first single-engined jet-powered
aircraft to complete a transatlantic flight. These milestones firmly establish its place among the pioneering jets of the world. Among its variants, the FB.5 fighter-bomber stands out as the most notable. With a production
tally of 1123 aircraft, of which 930 entered Royal Air Force service, it played a pivotal role. Those designated for overseas duty as the FB.9 boasted cockpit air conditioning, further highlighting the aircraft's
adaptability and significance.
Now, Airfix have carefully recreated this piece of military history in 1/48 scale ready for you to build and display.
