Description

The Avro Vulcan was an iconic aircraft in post-war British aviation, featuring a distinctive delta wing design. It was born out of a rigorous Air Ministry requirement for a fast, high-altitude strategic bomber capable of carrying nuclear payloads. In August 1952, the Vulcan's inaugural flight marked a significant leap forward, doubling the capabilities of previous British bombers. When it joined No.83 Squadron at RAF Waddington in July 1957, the Vulcan became the world's fastest nuclear-capable bomber.

By the time of the 1982 Falklands conflict, the Vulcan was nearing retirement as nuclear deterrence shifted to Royal Navy submarines. The unexpected Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands revived the Vulcan for one last mission — the sole aircraft capable of delivering a payload to the Islands from RAF Ascension Island, requiring multiple mid-air refuellings. The final three squadrons operating the Vulcan (Nos 44, 50, and 101) conducted a series of missions under the code name 'Black Buck.' The most renowned, 'Black Buck One,' damaged the Port Stanley runway with one of its twenty-one bombs, rendering the airfield unusable for fast jets and setting a record for the longest bombing raid in history at the time.
