Building on the success of the CR.32 “Freccia” biplane, which proved its reliability during the Spanish Civil War, Fiat developed the new CR.42 “Falco” in the late 1930s. This new single-seater fighter retained its predecessor's fixed landing gear and open cabin but introduced innovations such as a structure made entirely of aluminium and steel. Its air-cooled Fiat A.74 radial engine allowed the Falco to reach speeds of 400 km/h.

The CR.42 was praised by its pilots for its extraordinary manoeuvrability. However, it suffered from the limitations of its biplane configuration when compared to the more modern and powerful monoplane fighters entering service. To counter this, a dedicated night fighter version, the CR.42 CN, was created. This variant featured extended exhausts to reduce the engine's glare and minimise its visibility to enemy aircraft during night operations.
