With its distinctive inverted gull wings and fixed landing gear, the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka was a menacing symbol of the German Blitzkrieg. This two-seat dive-bomber/ground-attack aircraft, first flown in 1935, saw its combat debut in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. Several innovative features, including automatic dive brakes, ensured the plane's recovery from dives even if the pilot lost consciousness due to G-forces.The Stuka became a prominent figure in the early stages of World War II, providing crucial close air support for the Wehrmacht's Panzer divisions. However, its strengths were soon overshadowed by its weaknesses. The Battle of Britain exposed its vulnerability against faster and better-armed fighters like the Hurricane and Spitfire, ultimately relegating it to less demanding roles. Despite its initial success, the Stuka's limited capabilities ultimately became a relic of a bygone era in aerial warfare.
