The Kampfpanzer Leopard 1, designed by Porsche and built by Krauss-Maffei, revolutionised tank warfare when it entered service in 1965. Faced with the threat of devastating HEAT warheads, it traded heavy armour for firepower and mobility. Its streamlined design featured moderate armour effective against smaller calibre weapons, resulting in an unbeatable power-to-weight ratio for the era. With advanced suspension and unmatched cross-country capabilities, the Leopard outmanoeuvred most contemporary tanks, rivalled only by the French AMX-30 and Swedish Strv 103. Its main armament, a German-built version of the British Royal Ordnance L7 105mm rifled gun, cemented its status as a dominant force on the battlefield.
