Shock oil plays an important role in fine-tuning shock absorber characteristics. The viscosity (density) is rated in w (weight) or cSt (Centistoke, one-hundredth of a stroke) with a higher w or cSt rating relates to a thicker oil. As a general rule, thicker shock oils are used in the front suspension, with thinner oils in the rear.

Unlike traditional petroleum oils, Silicone oils do not require optimal temperature ranges for peak performance.
