The H-6K is the latest model of the H-6 bomber series and is an important part of China's nuclear triad. It made its public debut on 3 September 2015.

The H-6K uses a low fuel consumption engine and has correspondingly reduced weight and increased fuel capacity. The maximum range is reported to exceed 8,000 kilometres, with a maximum combat radius of nearly 3,500 kilometres. Compared with earlier H-6 models, which had a maximum payload of 9 tonnes, the H-6K has increased this to 12 tonnes, and is primarily used to carry new cruise missiles for striking remote targets. It can also carry laser-guided bombs and satellite-guided missiles for precision strikes against sea and land targets.

The H-6K can take off from relatively secure inland bases in China with forward-deployed fighter escort. Its maximum range of 8,000 km and combat radius of more than 3,500 km, combined with the CJ-10A cruise missile's range of approximately 2,500 km, means the H-6K can deter vast areas including what is often referred to as the "second island chain" while remaining within Chinese territory.
