The Grumman F8F Bearcat was the company's final piston-engine carrier fighter, representing the peak of this technology. Designed during WWII, the concept was to fit the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine into the smallest, most lightweight airframe possible. The result was an aircraft with an extraordinary rate of climb and superb agility that, while too late for WWII, served with distinction in the post-war era.
