Model Building Starter & Gift Sets

The Perfect Introduction to Scale Modelling

Diving into the world of scale modelling has never been easier. Whether you are picking up a new hobby or looking for the ultimate present for a creative friend or family member, our range of starter kits and gift sets provides everything you need in one convenient box. Designed for all skill levels—from absolute beginners to returning hobbyists—these sets remove the guesswork of trying to match the right paints and glues to your chosen model.

What Usually Comes in a Starter Kit?

While the exact contents can vary between brands and models, most starter and gift sets are ready to build straight out of the box. You will typically find:

• The Model Kit: High-quality plastic sprues featuring your chosen aircraft, car, ship, or tank.

• Acrylic Paints: A curated selection of the exact colours needed to bring your model to life.

• Poly Cement (Glue): Essential modelling adhesive to securely bond the plastic parts together.

• Paintbrushes: Basic brushes to help you apply the finishing touches.

The Ultimate Gift for All Ages

Model building is a fantastic, hands-on activity that encourages patience, focus, and attention to detail. Starter sets make incredible gifts for birthdays, Christmas, or just as a rewarding weekend project. Because they come with all the necessary supplies, the recipient can open the box and start building immediately. We stock options suitable for younger builders just starting, as well as more detailed gift sets for adults looking to unwind.

Top Brands You Can Trust

At Hobbies Direct, we stock starter sets from some of the most respected names in the scale modelling world:

• Airfix: Famous for their iconic red-box starter sets, Airfix offers a massive variety of classic aircraft, military vehicles, and cars that are incredibly beginner-friendly.

• Revell: Revell's model sets often include a fantastic selection of paints and a precision glue, making them a premium choice for both gifting and personal projects.

Tips for First-Time Builders

• Wash Your Sprues: Give the plastic parts a gentle wash in warm, soapy water before building to remove any manufacturing oils. This helps the paint stick better!

• Thin Your Paints: Two thin coats of paint will always look smoother and more detailed than one thick coat.

• Take Your Time: Read ahead in the instruction manual and dry-fit your parts before applying any glue.
