Affectionately nicknamed "Ilyusha" by its pilots and known variously as "Hunchback," "Flying Tank," or "Flying Infantryman" to ground troops, the Il-2's legacy goes far beyond its official title.

Boasting the title of the single most-produced military aircraft design in history with over 36,000 units built, and exceeding 42,000 when combined with its successor, the Il-10, the Il-2 cemented its place in aviation history. Even after the war, NATO dubbed it "Bark," a testament to its lasting impact.

This iconic aircraft played a pivotal role on the Eastern Front. During crucial moments, when production lagged behind demand, Joseph Stalin himself emphasised the Il-2's importance, declaring it "as essential to the Red Army as air and bread." In the face of relentless fighting, the Il-2 earned its reputation as a true workhorse, providing crucial support to the Red Army throughout the war.
