Description

The initiative to develop the M60A1 received approval in early 1960, coinciding with the decision to halt further advancements in advanced composite armour and the discontinuation of the T95 Medium Tank project. In March 1960, the initial proof of concept aimed to combine a modified M60 hull with the T95E7 turret. Even without the inclusion of siliceous cored armour, this turret offered enhanced ballistic protection.

The first two prototypes, known as Pilot 1 and Pilot 2, were completed in May 1961, with the third, Pilot 3, following in June 1961. It was during this period that the vehicle officially received the prototype designation M60E1. Chrysler Defence was responsible for building these vehicles. Pilot 1 underwent assessment in the climatic hangar at Eglin Air Force Base, while Pilot 2 was tested at the Yuma Test Station. Pilot 3 underwent field trials at Fort Knox. On October 22, 1961, the M60E1 was formally accepted into service under the designation "Tank, Combat, Full Tracked: 105-mm Gun, M60A1." Production commenced on October 13, 1962.

Academy have carefully recreated this vehicle in 1/72 scale ready for you to build and display.
