Airfix 1/72 McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1/FGR.2 Fight Jet Scaled Plastic Model Kit
Airfix 1/72 McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1/FGR.2 Fight Jet Scaled Plastic Model Kit
The Royal Air Force's (RAF) story with the iconic Phantom jet began in an unconventional way. Initially intended for the Royal Navy and stationed at Leuchars airbase in Fife, these Phantoms found themselves under RAF control following the withdrawal of HMS Ark Royal in 1978. This unexpected turn of events led to the RAF inheriting the entire Fleet Air Arm's Phantom fleet.Squadrons 43 and 111 took the reins of these Phantom FG.1 aircraft, tasked with safeguarding British airspace for over a decade. Their reign as guardians continued until 1989, when they transitioned to the more advanced BAe Tornado F.3.
