The Japanese Touring Car Championship (JTCC) launched in 1994 as the successor to the Group A-based JTC series, adopting regulations derived from the BTCC (British Touring Car Championship) — known internationally as FIA Class II / Super Touring. Machines were required to be four-door sedans with a front-mounted 2000cc engine, with chassis tuning freedom allowing teams to optimise weight distribution and suspension. One of Toyota's entries was the Corona ST191, developed by TOM's British subsidiary already competing in the BTCC. The Corona ST191 featured an improved front suspension and a TOM's-tuned 3S-GE4 1998cc engine. Five Corona ST191s entered the 1994 JTCC from Toyota Team TOM's, Toyota Team Cerumo and Object T. Masanori Sekiya and Tom Kristensen fought for the championship until the final round, making the first year of the new touring car race a great success.
