The Yak-11 was originally a warbird used for training by various air forces. After World War II, when its military service came to an end, the airframes were placed into storage. A French warbird enthusiast, Jean Salis, stumbled upon this collection and, recognising the aircraft's potential as a warbird or sport plane, managed to procure and export forty-one surplus airframes, which went on to achieve remarkable success in racing.
