The USS Enterprise, or "Big E", was the second of the Yorktown class aircraft carriers. Launched in 1936 after construction started in 1934, the Enterprise narrowly escaped the attack on Pearl Harbour on 7 December 1941 and was deployed to combat duty against the Japanese. "Big E" provided cover for the Doolittle Raid on the Japanese mainland and took part in the Battle of Midway, Battle of Philippines, Leyte Gulf, and provided air support during the Guadalcanal campaign, Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Palau, Iwo Jima and Ryuku. After WWII "Big E" took part in Operation Magic Carpet, bringing U.S. troops home. The USS Enterprise was decommissioned in 1947 and dismantled in 1958.
