When it first appeared in 1941, it was one of the fastest and most capable interceptors in the world, designed to engage high-flying enemy bombers. While it was less suited to the low-altitude dogfighting common on the Eastern Front, the MiG-3 played a crucial and heroic role in the air defence of Moscow during the critical winter of 1941-1942.
