The T-72A was a significant upgrade to the ubiquitous T-72 main battle tank, appearing in 1979. This new variant featured a laser rangefinder and greatly enhanced protection from its distinctive composite turret armour, earning it the unofficial NATO nickname "Dolly Parton". The Model 1979 also added a full set of smoke grenade launchers, creating a truly formidable opponent on the Cold War battlefield.
