Born as an alternative to the Obiekt 490, the Obiekt 490A aimed to add firepower and manpower. This experimental Soviet tank, proposed in 1981, boasted a redesigned turret housing an externally mounted gun and space for an additional crew member. While the chassis saw minor tweaks, the turret overhaul marked the biggest change.

Despite its innovative spirit, incorporating multiple cutting-edge technologies to outpace rivals, the project wasn't destined for greatness. The arrival of the newer Obiekt 477 Molot program sealed its fate, leading to its cancellation in 1984.

Though short-lived, the Obiekt 490A remains a fascinating glimpse into the future of tank design. Its legacy lives on as a testament to the Soviet Union's push for technological advancements and its ambition to stay ahead of the curve.
