The T-80UD is a modification of the T-80U main battle tank, replacing the high-fuel-consumption gas turbine with a diesel engine. Since the initial T-80 entered production in 1976, it had used gas turbines; the T-80UD introduced a more traditional diesel engine. It appeared in 1985 and entered Soviet Army service in 1987. Apart from the difference in the power unit, the design of the T-80UD is essentially the same as the T-80U. Production in Ukraine commenced in 1987, with approximately 500–800 tanks manufactured. Originally intended as the main battle tank of the Soviet Army, production came to an abrupt halt in 1991 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. These tanks served in both Russia and Ukraine, with some Ukrainian T-80UDs exported to Pakistan in the late 1990s. Armour protection includes composite armour and additional explosive reactive armour, and the vehicle is equipped with a three-prevention system and an automatic fire extinguishing and explosion suppression system.
