The La Galissonnière-class light cruisers were a series of sleek, fast, and well-armed warships that served with the French Navy during the Second World War. Representing a successful balance of firepower, speed, and protection, their design was based on the earlier Émile Bertin but incorporated the superior armour scheme of the heavy cruiser Algérie. This resulted in a robust and capable fighting ship. The Marseillaise was a prime example of this class; her excellent hull form allowed her to exceed her design speed, reaching an impressive 35 knots during trials. After the outbreak of war, she was assigned to the Third Cruiser Division of the French fleet. Her destiny, along with that of many other French warships, was sealed on November 27, 1942. To prevent the powerful French fleet from falling into enemy hands following the German occupation of Vichy France, the Marseillaise was scuttled by her own crew in the harbour of Toulon, a dramatic and defiant final act.
