Heavy cruiser HMS York is the first ship of the British Royal Navy's York-class heavy cruisers of World War II. In September 1939, after the outbreak of war, she was assigned to cover transportation fleet tasks; in October she began to hunt for Germany. In April 1940 she participated in transporting army troops to Norway during the Norway campaign. In March 1941 the fleet covering Army transportation arrived in Crete's Suda Bay. On the night of the 25th, two Italian navy explosive boats scored hits, causing her to lose combat effectiveness. To avoid sinking, the British Navy dragged her onto a sandbar. Because she still could not be repaired, she was used only as an air defence fort. After the Luftwaffe bombed the wreck, following the end of the war, Britain and Greece negotiated and the wreck was demolished in Greece.
