The S-3 Viking was the United States Navy's primary carrier-based, jet-powered anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and surveillance aircraft for over three decades. Entering service in the mid-1970s, the "Hoover" (so nicknamed for the sound of its engines) was a common and essential sight on flight decks, providing a vital layer of protection for the carrier battle group throughout the Cold War and beyond.
