The creation of the Mi-4 was prompted by the American H-19 Chickasaw and the introduction of these U.S. helicopters during the Korean War. Although the Mi-4 shares some visual similarities with the H-19 Chickasaw, it distinguishes itself as a larger helicopter with superior lifting capacity. It commenced operational service in 1952, succeeding the Mi-1. The helicopter made its public debut on the global stage in 1952 during the Soviet Aviation Day held in Tushino.
