The Mil Mi-4, given the NATO reporting name "Hound," was a landmark Soviet transport helicopter developed in the early 1950s. Its creation was a direct response to the successful deployment of American helicopters, such as the Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw, during the Korean War. While the Mi-4's general layout, with its distinctive nose-mounted engine, was influenced by the H-19, the Soviet design was substantially larger, more powerful, and capable of carrying a heavier payload. First revealed to the public at the 1952 Tushino Air Day, the Mi-4 entered service the following year and quickly became the backbone of Soviet and Warsaw Pact helicopter forces. It served in a multitude of roles for decades. The Mi-4AV variant represented a significant evolution, transforming the humble transport into a capable helicopter gunship by fitting it with weapon pylons for rocket pods and machine guns, providing essential fire support for ground troops.
