Tips for Rebuilding Your RC Transmission

Rebuilding an RC gearbox can seem daunting, but following a few simple steps will ensure a smooth, long-lasting rebuild:

  1. Check Your Bearings: While you have the transmission case open, inspect the ball bearings. Worn or gritty bearings can cause shafts to wobble, leading to poor gear alignment and stripped teeth. Replace any rough bearings immediately.
  2. Use the Right Grease: Metal-on-metal gears require a high-quality, tacky gear grease to reduce heat and friction. For composite or plastic gears, use a silicone-based grease that won't degrade the plastic. Avoid over-greasing, as excess grease can attract dirt and cause drag.
  3. Inspect the Slipper Clutch: The slipper clutch is designed to protect your transmission from shock loads (like landing jumps). Ensure your slipper pads are in good condition and the clutch is adjusted correctly to prevent unnecessary strain on your new gears.
