The de Havilland Mosquito's greatest attribute was its incredible speed. Originally developed as a high-speed unarmed bomber, the fact it could outpace contemporary fighter aircraft made it a perfect platform for photo reconnaissance. The PR.XVI variant was arguably the most effective photo reconnaissance aircraft in the skies leading up to the D-Day landings. Able to fly higher, faster, and for longer, these aircraft could go anywhere and see everything, providing vital tactical imagery for the Allied war effort. So effective were they that specialist Luftwaffe units were formed specifically to try and intercept them, often with little success.
