The BMW M3 E30 is one of the most successful touring cars in motorsport history. Homologated for Group A racing in 1987, nearly 20 BMW M3s entered the 24 Hours of Spa at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on 30–31 July 1988. Car number 56, driven by Dieter Quester, Altfrid Heger and Roberto Ravaglia for BMW Motorsport GmbH, won by three laps over the second-placed Ford Sierra Cosworth. The M3 was based on the E30 3 Series with blister fenders front and rear, an inclined rear side window, high-deck trunk, rear wing, and front spoiler. Its 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine — derived from the BMW M1's six-cylinder — was tuned to 300 hp for Group A competition. An Evolution model later enlarged displacement to 2.5 litres. The M3 went on to win many touring car races worldwide through the 1990s.
