The Nissan R390 GT1 was a purpose-built racing car designed to compete at the highest level of sports car racing in the late 1990s, including the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. Jointly developed by Nissan and TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing), the R390 GT1 took its name from the R380, a car that had excited Japanese motorsports enthusiasts over thirty years earlier. With its sleek, aerodynamically refined low body and a powerful 3.5 liter V8 engine producing an awesome 600 horsepower, the R390 GT1 was a formidable contender. The engine is bolted directly to the carbon composite monocoque, with its tremendous power delivered to the rear wheels via a transversely mounted six-speed transmission. The four-wheel double wishbone suspension system is connected to horizontally mounted shock absorbers via pushrods and bell cranks. Three R390 GT1s were entered in the 1997 Le Mans event, and car No. 21 achieved a pole position in the pre-qualifying race.
