The Renault 5 Turbo was engineered as a formidable machine for the prestigious World Rally Championship (WRC), deriving its powerful base from Renault's highly popular FF (front-engine, front-wheel-drive) compact car, the Renault 5. At its heart lay a potent 1.4-litre inline 4-cylinder engine, equipped with a turbocharger specifically developed from sports car racing technology. This impressive power unit was midship-mounted, uniquely positioned where the back seats would typically be, and paired with a responsive 5-speed transmission. The vehicle's suspension was a reinforced iteration of the double wishbone 4-wheel independent suspension system, providing enhanced control and handling for rally conditions. The distinctive 3-door hatchback body was crafted primarily from lightweight fibreglass and aluminium for components such as the roof, doors, and bonnet, contributing to its remarkable kerb weight of just 850-900 kg. Further enhancing its aggressive and powerful figure were large over fenders, an air dam skirt integrated seamlessly with the bumper, and a prominent spoiler affixed to the rear end of the roof.
