The Renault 5 Turbo is one of the most audacious and iconic performance cars of the 1980s. Born from a desire to win the World Rally Championship, it was a radical transformation of the humble, front-engined Renault 5 city car. Engineers threw out the rulebook, moving the engine to the middle of the car, right where the rear seats would normally be. This mid-ship layout housed a potent 1.4-litre inline-four engine, boosted by a turbocharger to produce 160 horsepower. In a car weighing just over 900kg, the performance was electrifying. The exterior was just as dramatic, with huge, vented overfenders giving the car an incredibly aggressive stance. With advanced double-wishbone suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, it had the handling to match its power. This incredible package was immediately proven on the world stage, with the Renault 5 Turbo storming to victory at the legendary 1981 Monte Carlo Rally.

Timed perfectly to celebrate the return of the Renault 5 nameplate as an all-electric car, Tamiya is proud to re-release its classic 1/24 scale model kit of the original Turbo in a limited production run. This kit perfectly captures the eye-catching form of the legendary French rally hero. The model features a fully detailed interior, a realistic chassis underside with accurately rendered suspension components, and solid rubber tyres with an authentic tread pattern. This re-issued kit comes with an updated, high-quality decal sheet that includes markings to build the car with either a red or black body colour, as well as realistic seat patterns and logos. To complete the package, a driver figure in a racing suit is also included, ready to be placed in the cockpit of this magnificent mid-engined machine.
