During the mid-1930s, prior to the outbreak of World War II, the French army adopted the H35 as a light tank for its cavalry units. The H39 emerged in 1939 as an improved version of the H35. Its robust body and turret were crafted using advanced casting techniques, and it was powered by a 120 horsepower engine. The primary armament was a 33-calibre 37mm gun. Many vehicles were also fitted with distinctive skids on the rear of the body, designed to aid them in overcoming trenches and other battlefield obstacles. The H39 fought valiantly against the overwhelmingly superior German army during the 1940 invasion of France. Following France's surrender, the German army repurposed and made improvements to the remaining vehicles, notably upgrading elements such as the commander's cupola, and subsequently deployed them within their own forces under the official designation Pz.Kpfw.38H 735(f).
