The Scharnhorst was a German battleship of World War II. She was built by the War Naval Shipyard Wilhelmshaven and launched on October 3, 1936, entering service on January 7, 1939. In 1938, Scharnhorst found insufficient premium bow freeboard in the trials, docking bow refit in 1939. In 1940 she sank the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Glorious and two destroyers in the North Sea. In 1941 she broke into the Atlantic and, over a two-month operation, sank 22 merchant ships totalling 11,500 tons. On December 25, 1943, she was intercepted by the Royal Navy led by the battleship HMS Duke of York and was eventually sunk. This 1/700 scale kit from Trumpeter is a detailed replica of the battleship. It features over 300 parts, a multi-directional slide-moulded hull, finely rendered deck wood pattern, photo-etched parts, a real metal anchor chain, and a display stand with engraved nameplate.
