The Scharnhorst was a famous German battleship of World War II. Launched in 1936, she had a distinguished and aggressive career, sinking the British aircraft carrier HMS Glorious and conducting successful raiding operations in the Atlantic. Her career came to a dramatic end in December 1943 when she was sunk by the Royal Navy's Home Fleet, led by the battleship HMS Duke of York.
