HMS York was the lead ship of the Royal Navy's final class of treaty-limited heavy cruisers. Entering service in 1930, she was a distinctive warship with a powerful armament and served diligently in the early years of the Second World War. Her initial duties involved the crucial task of escorting convoys across the Atlantic and hunting for German surface raiders. In April 1940, HMS York played a key role in the Norwegian Campaign, transporting Allied troops to the contested region. Her career took a dramatic and ultimately fatal turn in the Mediterranean. While anchored in Suda Bay, Crete, in March 1941, she was attacked and crippled by Italian explosive motorboats. To prevent the cruiser from sinking in the bay, she was beached on a sandbar. In a unique twist of fate, the immobilised HMS York continued the fight as a static anti-aircraft battery, defending the harbour until she was further damaged by German bombers and ultimately abandoned.
