The Gloster Meteor, Britain's first jet fighter and the only Allied jet aircraft to see service during the Second World War, paved the way for a new era in aerial combat. Its later F.8 variant, regarded as the most effective version, became the backbone of Britain's fighter defence force for five years after its introduction in 1949.
