Work had begun in April 1939 to create the first jet fighter in history, the Messerschmitt Me 262. The new high-speed fighter plane used a turbine jet system and had its maiden flight on the 18th of July 1942. Powered by two Jumo 004B engines, the Me 262 had a maximum speed of 870km/h at an altitude of 6000 m. Its range was 1050km with a ceiling of 11400m.

The Me262 A-1a/U5 was to carry an armament of six MK108 canon. Only one prototype (W.Nr.112355) was fitted with this installation under the designation.
