The Panzer III was a vital component of the German Panzerwaffe through the early and middle periods of the Second World War. However, the emergence of more heavily armoured opponents like the Soviet T-34 led to the Panzer III being superseded in the anti-tank role by the up-gunned Panzer IV. It then transitioned into a successful infantry support vehicle. This kit represents the Panzerbefehlswagen (Pz.Bef.Wg.), or armoured command vehicle, based on the Panzer III Ausf. J chassis. These specialised vehicles were essential mobile command posts, filled with extra radio equipment that allowed commanders to effectively direct their armoured formations in the heat of battle. The Ausf. J was a mature version of the Panzer III, providing a solid and dependable base for this critical command and control role.
