The Dassault Mirage III is a family of single-engine fighter aircraft that holds the distinction of being the first Western European combat aircraft to exceed Mach 2 in horizontal flight. Developed in the 1950s in response to a French government request for a lightweight, all-weather interceptor, the delta-winged Mirage III became a hugely successful design, spawning numerous variants. Among these was the Mirage III R, a dedicated reconnaissance version. This variant removed the standard nose radar and replaced it with a bay containing up to five cameras, turning the potent fighter into a high-speed intelligence-gathering platform.
