Developed in the mid-1930s as a cavalry tank, the SOMUA S35 was a balanced and effective design, with many considering it the best French tank at the start of WWII. Its use of large cast hull and turret sections was ahead of its time, and its combination of a 47mm main gun and good mobility proved a worthy adversary for German tanks during the Battle of France in 1940.
