Overview

The Type 83 is the first fully indigenous self-propelled howitzer of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, entering service in the early 1980s. It mounts a powerful 152mm main gun, derived from the towed Type 66 howitzer, in a large, fully enclosed turret at the rear of a purpose-built tracked chassis. This combination provides the PLA with a mobile and survivable heavy artillery platform for battlefield fire support.
