In 1987 the Kyosho Ultima took the top three places in the 2WD class at the World Championships in the UK. The Ultima Pro followed in 1988 as the high point of that winning series. Now it is back as the 21st release in the Kyosho Vintage Series, combining the early 1988 model with the long-wheelbase version that arrived in 1989. The wide polycarbonate body is made from the original Ultima Pro mould, and the included decals let you recreate the early model's box art livery. Underneath, a durable 6061 aluminium main chassis works with a stiff FRP upper deck to get the balance between rigidity and flex just right, so this RC buggy has a classic racing look with a modern backbone.
Kyosho has also updated the running gear so it drives as well as it looks. Long front lower arms widen the front track by 10mm on each side, and the wheelbase is 10mm longer than the late original for steadier handling at speed. Gold anodised dial-adjust oil shocks sit on extended FRP shock towers, so every millimetre of stroke goes into soaking up bumps. Double wishbone suspension and turnbuckle tie rods make camber and toe changes quick and precise. A smooth ball differential and a sturdy universal swing shaft send power to the rear wheels, and grippy 2.2-inch tyres, medium compound up front and soft at the rear, dig into loose dirt. It also has full ball bearings, a crash-resistant nylon rear wing and the choice of mounting the battery flat or upright. For builders who want a true piece of racing history, this kit pays back every hour on the bench.
A rear-wheel-drive layout with the motor mounted on the rear overhang puts weight over the driven wheels for strong traction out of corners. The aluminium main chassis, FRP upper deck and front and rear shock towers are all newly made for this reissue, so you get period-correct looks with fresh, rigid parts.
The wide polycarbonate body comes from the same mould as the original Ultima Pro, so the late-1980s racing style is reproduced exactly. It gives the buggy a completely different look from the original Ultima and makes a great blank canvas for a period-correct paint scheme.
Oil shocks in the same gold anodised finish as the original bring back the classic look. Dial-type spring adjusters replace the old clamp style, so ride height changes are quicker and more precise. Kyosho has carefully selected the front and rear springs to suit the chassis.
Longer front and rear FRP shock towers let the shocks use their full stroke. That extra travel soaks up bumps reliably, keeping the tyres in contact with the ground for consistent damping on rough tracks.
Long front lower arms, the same size as the 1989 late-model Ultima Pro, keep the front end planted for better road holding. At the rear, you can adjust toe angle by swapping the lower arm bushings to tune how the buggy handles.
Turnbuckle tie rods come standard, so you can set toe and camber by simply turning the rod. Quick, precise adjustments mean less time on the bench and more time dialling in the buggy at the track.
You can mount a standard round straight-pack battery horizontally or vertically to suit your setup. The vertical position requires a low-profile steering servo with a short front-to-back length, giving you another way to tune the weight balance.
A ball differential comes standard and gives a limited-slip effect for smooth cornering on any surface. It puts power down cleanly through turns and keeps the rear end predictable on and off the throttle.
The steering servo sits 90 degrees from its original Ultima Pro position, and a simpler servo saver arm completes the update. Together they give a linear, predictable steering response for confident lines through every corner.
Bigger 2.2" tyres use a medium compound up front and a soft compound at the rear for better bump handling and cornering stability off-road. The newly designed 8-hole wheels keep the original offset, and the rear wheels also take Optima-series offsets for more tyre choice.
The rear wing is now nylon resin instead of the original polycarbonate. It flexes rather than cracks in a crash, and tough resin wing stays add even more durability, so the buggy's classic look survives hard racing.
