The heavy tank destroyer Elefant was developed using the chassis designed by Ferdinand Porsche for the Tiger tank competition. Initially named "Ferdinand," the vehicle was heavily armoured and equipped with the powerful 88mm gun, which was capable of destroying enemy tanks at very long ranges. They made their combat debut at the pivotal Battle of Kursk in 1943. Although formidable, the design had limitations in mobility and reliability. The surviving vehicles were later upgraded with improvements and modifications under the final designation "Elefant."
